I remember the moment I knew I wanted to do interior design for my career. I’m sure some of you can relate to my experience. I was sitting in my bedroom at college and it was a tiny little room with way too much stuff in it. Two twin beds were oddly situated in the room leaving just a path to walk wide enough to open the drawer of the oversized dresser in the room and a closet that wasn’t deep enough for the hangers that my shirts were on. One day I came home in a particularly rotten mood and sat on my bed thinking and looking around. I’m not sure why but I just started to move stuff around. As I started moving stuff I couldn’t stop. I ended up the the beds situated in such a way that allowed a much greater walking space and it really opened up the tiny room. At least that is what it felt like. My roommate came in and was so impressed and told me that the whole room felt bigger, less crowded and just felt good.
Feng shui is a system of laws considered to govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy. I achieved a very positive feng shui with this experience and knew from then on that is what I wanted to pursue for my career. It made that semester so much better and I wanted to help people experience that with their own homes and businesses.
I recently remodeled a home of a young couple that were new to the area and moved for a job. Their house needed a bit of work. I get my inspiration at times from websites or pictures I see and try to recreate that feeling I get when I see things that i like. I was recently on a website looking through blinds because his couple was in dire need of some good ones. We looked at things and found a great pair of blinds that really helped give the room the right feel. They were a dark wood color to prevent unwanted light in but when opened, not only let in a great amount of light but looked beautiful with the feng shui of the room when the light would shine it.
It’s amazing how moving a bed, chair, table or dresser can change the feeling of a room but even more amazing that something as small and out of the way as blinds can bring the whole room together. I love what I do and love bring a smile to people’s faces.
