Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a celebration; it’s a reminder of the values, traditions, and resilience that define the Hispanic population. As Hispanic professionals, we bring unique strengths to every industry we touch, and real estate is no exception. Our sense of family, dedication to hard work, and commitment to community are assets that give us a competitive edge.
According to a report from the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, the Hispanic population is one of the fastest-growing in the United States, and we are driving homeownership at historic levels. That means more families are looking for agents who understand their language, culture, and dreams. When we step into real estate, we’re not just building our careers but shaping the future of homeownership for our community.
When I arrived in the United States as a child from Panama, my family reminded me every day that success comes from perseverance and education. Today, those lessons guide me as the first male Hispanic president of the Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association (ORRA), and they continue to inspire me to help open doors for others in our community.
As we reflect during Hispanic Heritage Month, I want to share five tips agents can use to leverage their heritage as a strength in real estate.
- Honor Your Roots and Language
Language is one of a Hispanic agent's greatest strengths. Many Hispanic Americans grew up bilingual, seamlessly switching between English and Spanish depending on where we were and who we were speaking with. In real estate, this skill is more than communication – it’s connection. When we serve clients in their preferred language, we build trust and remove barriers.
Heritage also teaches us that learning the language of the country we live in is essential to success. When my family moved from Panama, my grandmother would make us read to her in English every night, even though she didn’t understand the words. Her message was simple: To thrive, we must master communication. That lesson still rings true today, especially in a field like real estate, where relationships are everything.
Honoring our roots also means recognizing the cultural values that shape our clients’ decisions, such as the importance of family involvement, the pride of first-time homeownership, and the traditions that make a house feel like home. These are things we understand intuitively as Hispanic professionals, and they allow us to connect with our clients in ways that others may not.
- Value Education
For generations, our families have told us that education is the key to opportunity. Many of us grew up hearing reminders from parents and grandparents that hard work and learning would open doors in this country. That mindset applies directly to real estate.
This is not an industry where we succeed by chance but by preparation. From licensing classes to continuing education, every course and every training session is an investment in our future. At the start of my career, I had no sales experience and no peers to guide me. What kept me moving forward was the decision to treat every day as a chance to learn something new.
As Hispanic professionals, we can carry that same commitment with us. Whether it’s mastering negotiation, studying market trends, or learning how technology is reshaping the industry, education gives us the tools to compete and thrive. And when we view education as a lifelong process, we not only advance our careers but also enhance the perception of our community within the industry.
- Lean on Your Community
Community is at the heart of who we are as Hispanics. We grow up surrounded by family, neighbors, and friends who feel like family, and that sense of connection becomes one of our greatest assets in real estate.
For many of us, our first clients come from within our own circles: relatives buying their first home, friends looking to invest or neighbors ready to take the next step. When we serve our community well, word spreads quickly. Referrals are built on trust, which our culture values deeply.
I’ve experienced this firsthand. Early in my career, a family walked into my office and recognized my last name. They asked if I was from Panama, and it turned out they had once stayed at my uncle’s home while stationed there with the U.S. military. That moment reminded me of how small the world can be, and how powerful cultural connections are in building relationships.
When we lean on our community, we create opportunities and ensure that more Hispanic families achieve the dream of homeownership.
- Lead With Cultural Pride
Heritage is not something to hide; it’s something to celebrate. In real estate, our culture gives us a unique perspective on what home means. For many Hispanic families, a home is more than four walls, but a gathering place, a source of pride, and a foundation for building generational wealth.
When we lead with authenticity, clients see it. They appreciate working with an agent who understands why Abuela needs a room of her own or why a backyard big enough for family cookouts matters as much as square footage. These details might be overlooked by others, but they are central to how our families live and thrive.
By embracing who we are, we connect deeply with our clients and inspire others in the industry. Representation matters. When other Hispanic professionals see us succeed while staying true to our roots, they realize they can do the same.
- Give Back to Lift Others Up
One of the most powerful values we carry as Hispanics is the belief that when one of us rises, we bring others with us. In real estate, that means using our success to create opportunities for the next generation.
Giving back can take many forms: mentoring a new Hispanic agent, assisting in translation for non-Spanish-speaking colleagues, or advocating for policies that support fair housing. Each act of service strengthens our community and shows others what’s possible.
For me, giving back was a promise. Early in my career, I told myself that if I succeeded, I would always help other agents do the same. That commitment has guided me ever since, whether through mentoring colleagues or advocating for diversity at ORRA.
When we give back, we create a ripple effect. We open doors for others and leave the industry stronger than we found it.
