Before repairing afoundation crack it is important to diagnose the cause of the crack and its effects on the building structure.

The significance of any foundation crack depends on the crack's cause, size, shape, pattern, location, foundation materials, extent of cracking, impact of the crack on the building, and possibly other factors as well. If there is an underlying ongoing problem causing foundation movement or damage, that problem needs to be corrected too.

Cracks in poured concrete walls that are larger than 1/4", cracks which are increasing in size, or cracks which are otherwise indicative of foundation movement should be evaluated by a professional.

Before repairing a foundation crack it is important to diagnose the cause of the crack and its effects on the building structure.

The typical method of carrying out concrete crack repairs is to fix the cracks with caulk. This method is not effective and fixes the cracks superficially. When the water gets stored in the crack it leads to efflorescence, which loosens the caulk over a period of time and within few weeks, starts coming out and therefore is of no use. The other option is to make use of hydraulic cement. Hydraulic cement repairs the concrete cracks providing rigid shape to hold the crack. There is a continuous shrink and expansion process going on in the concrete which ultimately loosens the rigid rod.

Another popular concrete crack repair method includes crack injection, which is designed to repair the cracks in the concrete walls. The crack injection is mainly designed to avoid cracks on the outer surface of your home. It is meant for cracks, which are of two types - hairline and cracks that are half an inch or more in size. The crack injection is the easiest method to repair the cracks as it requires no digging and helps in preventing water leakage on a permanent basis. Crack injection method injects polyurethane that expands to an extent that can fill the crack permanently. Concrete crack repair procedure requires a lot of patience and perseverance and is best done by a professional.

Cracked concrete slabs can be repaired with the help of resin and silica sand that is much harder and stronger and is not very flexible. This method is even quicker and easier to implement. Concrete crack repair is very useful for filling cracks on the factory floors, driveways and garage floors.

There are other interesting methods that can solve the problem of crack in your concrete. For example, one particular method uses polyurethane crack filler, which is meant to be very flexible and mainly used on poured concrete foundation. The common use of crack filler is to fill the cracks in the concrete walls, which is much better than patching. Do not allot this work to unskilled workers in order to minimize on cost. This may result in poor quality of work and you may not obtain the desired results.
