Moving Tips: How To Pack All Of Your Clothes

Moving can be an excitingly stressful process. From filling out tons of paper work to getting your finances in order, packing all of your belongings and ultimately making the move, it's important to take a strategical approach to the process.

Once your listing is marked as sold, you can start the packing process by working through your clothing . These items are one of the first things you can start packing, focusing first on the clothing styles that are out of season. Regardless of how much of a time crunch you're in, follow these quick and easy steps when packing your clothing for a move.

Step 1:  Sort and separate. Through the years, we tend to hold on to clothing items that no longer fit us, are out of style, or we simply don't wear. Prior to packing any of your clothing for your move, take an inventory of everything you own. Then make piles of basics, items you wear every day, items that might be questionable, and items that you can definitely donate. When sorting, be mindful of clothing that is damaged, stained, or worn. These items can be thrown out or used to cushion more fragile items, like glassware, during the move.

Step 2:  Pack your immediate needs separately. As you're going through everything, be mindful of the clothing you'll want to wear throughout the moving process. On the day of the move, you won't have much access to the boxes, suitcases, and garment bags you're packing, so pack a duffle bag with the necessities. Undergarments, comfortable tops and bottoms, and a pair of pajamas will hold you over until you get settled in your new home.

Step 3:  Choose the right vessel. Clothing can get very heavy fairly quickly, so it's important to use the right vehicle when you're packing. The weight of clothes can be drastically underestimated, and while you may be able to fit a ton into a big box, the weight can quickly become overwhelming, causing the bottom to fall out. To avoid this problem, use suitcases and duffle bags in lieu of standard packing boxes. If boxes are your only option, use small 12x12 boxes and test the weight of them as you add items.

Step 4:  Bundle clothing efficiently. To get the most out of the box or suitcase you're using, fold your clothes neatly and tightly to fit as much as you can into the space. For the best results, use the bundle method. Start by laying a large piece of clothing out, then lay clothing on top of that article, layering one by one. Work from the largest items you have down to the smallest, then roll them together until they create a tightly wound bundle. Use a hair tie or rubber bands to keep everything secure.

Step 5:  Label, label, label! Use a method of labeling when packing up your clothes to keep everything organized. This is especially helpful for those with big families. You're able to label what is in each box, who it belongs to, and where it should go in your new home.
