5 Ways to Make Your Next Open House Kid Friendly

An open house can be stressful enough, without the added factor of active kids. Add a few young families into the mix, and you have a recipe for disaster on your hands if you’re not prepared. Thankfully, it’s pretty easy to make sure kids are entertained, leaving parents to explore and fully appreciate the house you have on display.

Many of these activities can be completed with just a little supervision, depending on how old the kids who came along are. If you have help, perhaps from another agent (consider offering to do the same for their next open house) or a teen of your own, you can get a little more creative with your kids’ activities. For quick set up and easy clean up, keep your supplies compact enough to throw in a crate you can keep at your office or in your car.

1. Play outside. If the weather is nice and the home you’re showing has a yard, break out outdoor activities that don’t require too much supervision. Try hula hoops, chalk, a Frisbee and bubbles, which are all inexpensive and easy to find.

2. Turn on the TV. This can be complicated if you’re showing an empty home, but if you have a TV with service and/or tablet with WiFi there are tons of TV shows that most parents will be totally okay with. Choose classics everyone loves or let kids pick from this list of family-friendly TV shows.

3. Bring printables. Pack crayons and a few printouts (or cheap coloring books) to help keep kids entertained when you’re stuck inside without digital distractions. Coloring pages, word searches, tic tac toe and blank paper are all helpful. Just remember to stick to crayons or colored pencils and steer kids away from upholstery or carpet.

4. Prep snacks. One of the easiest ways to keep kids happy is tasty snacks. The key is to make them mess-free and allergy-friendly. This site has a whole list of good ideas, including carrots, apples, popcorn and rice cakes. Just make sure to ask parents first if kids can snack while they look around.

5. Get crafty. Bring a few craft supplies that won’t leave you with glue in the couch cushions and kids of all ages can have fun with. Think pipe cleaners, construction paper, crayons and stickers to help kids get creative.
