A Slippery Disaster

Well, this article-story is about what it sounds like, but the best is, no one saw this disaster coming, it was such a surprise. I just want to add that people should be more careful when it comes to anything wet. Yes, I know life is rushed, we all have so many things to get done in a day that most people do things even without realizing it.

However, at times, this rush we are in, causes people to have disasters and bad things can happen. I am sure you all know that certain building materials can be extremely slippery, especially when wet. This we found out the hard way.

So, this is how it happened. A friend of mine called and invited me to spend the weekend with her, little did we know this would turn out to be a weekend neither of us would forget. My friend had read about this new holiday place where you can rent comfortably-sized cabins next to the dam at an amazing rate. We were going to go up there and see if it was all it said it would be, especially since she had already booked and paid for the place. You see, we loved going on small adventures together. Yet, this turned out to be a bit more than we bargained for.

If was early Saturday morning, we were packed and hit the road, suitcases in the storage compartment and snacks on the back seat. Once we pulled into the petrol station in the last town on our way there the excitement began as we only had a 2-hour drive left. Little did we know that soon we were going to wish that the town was closer.

As we were filling up we heard the weather report predicting some flooding rain in the area we were currently in. Now that surely spoiled our tanning schedule but we didn’t mind too much. We loved spending time together and my friend always packed her board games, so, we would have plenty to do.

We went on our way and found the cabin without any hassles. It did not look as advertised but did not seem to be falling apart either, it actually seemed nice and cozy. We had just finished unpacking the car and settling in when the first rain hit us and we were glad to be inside already. However, soon we started to notice a couple of leaks and put out buckets. But, those weren’t the only leaks.

We made coffee and sat down to play a couple of rounds of cards as the rain came down harder, and soon the roof started to look like a strainer and not a roof. Firstly, we went from room to room to ensure that all plugs were off as we did not intend on getting electrified.

Due to the multiple leaks, it did not take long for us to be standing in water and everything was soaked. We didn’t nearly have enough buckets or even towels to try and cover some of the furniture, not that I think that would have helped any.

Consequently, we spend most of our night mopping and emptying water buckets just to try and keep it somewhat dry. The roof was leaking so bad it looked like it was raining inside the house. As the rain got more I decide that I’m going to put the power off completely just in case any wall plugs get water.

The box with the main breakers was situated upstairs. So, I told my friend that I will go up and put the power off, she should stay downstairs. I made my way up the stairs with my torch ready in my hand. But as I got to the box to put the power off, it went out on its own and I heard a terrible scream. I knew that it was not me screaming so I ran down the stairs to where I had left my friend.

But, remember now, it is raining in and basically flooding the house. My impulse to run is what caused my accident, although I was only concerned about my friend and wanted to help her. As I took the descent of the first two steps I felt my footing disappear and I descended the stairs face first.

I stopped at the bottom in agony with her looking down at me. My mouth and my head seemed to be aching in turn and it looked like I was raining blood from my mouth. Very concerned my friend grabbed a towel and offered it to me. I held it in front of my mouth and slowly got up.

We rushed to the car and drove she drove me into town. At the hospital, the emergency dentist was called and I was rushed to theatre.

I don’t know how long I was out but when I awoke my friend was sitting there beside me and I could no longer hear the rain. The doctor came in and said I had broken three of my dental implants and not just the part above the gum line but also the implant posts. The dentist said that this does not happen often, but at least they were able to remove them and fit new implants.

The moral of my story is, never run in a house, especially not a wet one.
