Mold Mold

Mold is a real problem which no one should underestimate. It is produced by fungal species that release mycotoxins. They may cause brain tissue inflammation, asthma, sinusitis, and according to the study published in the “American Journal of Public Health” can cause depression.

Mold can live on any organic matter, both outdoors and indoors, especially in a warm and humid environment. Spores can get inside your house through clothes, shoes, or even pet hair. Any place in your house or office can be exposed to harmful effects of mold.

How to prevent mold

Mold grows easily and is hard to control. However, there are some ways to prevent it.

  • You should closely examine the following places:
    • Roofs, pipes, windows, inside air conditioners because they are connected with water flooding, leaks and condensation.
    • Any organic material like wood, cotton, food.
    • Hidden mold can be found in carpets, paper, furniture, dust.
  • Keep the indoor temperature higher and the relative humidity levels lower. It reduces condensation. Stop using a humidifier when relative humidity levels are over 50%.
  • Keep the air around moving. Air circulation helps prevent mold growth due to evaporation.
  • Clean and dust your home regularly. Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter which removes mold spores.
  • Use venting fans in the bathroom and kitchen to eliminate moisture.

If you find or smell the mold, it’s advised to remove it immediately:

  • Apply commercial mold control products containing bleach or ammonia. You should also wear a respirator or mask while working with mold spores. Your arms, legs and hands should be properly protected to prevent an allergic reaction.
  • Use vinegar once or twice a week. Scrub regularly the affected area with borax solution.

It is no secret that mold causes damage and jeopardizes health. However, a few precautions outlined above will lessen its harmful effects and protect your home.
