3 Home Maintenance Issues that Forecast Bigger Problems

Written by Posted On Thursday, 03 January 2019 13:57

Regular home maintenance projects can ward off many serious repair issues, and they could potentially delay the need for major replacements. You understandably do your best to stay on top of home maintenance projects, but some seemingly minor maintenance issues may easily be put off for another day. Some of these same issues may indicate that a more serious underlying problem is brewing. When you identify these potential issues sooner, you can take steps to keep major repair problems at bay.

Pipes that Clog Frequently

Pipes clog from time to time as you use your plumbing system regularly. For example, some clogs develop from an accumulation of hair, grease or oil and other natural items that flush through the pipes regularly. However, when your pipes clog frequently and for no reason, this may indicate the need for professional drain cleaning or even a scoping service. One cause of frequent clogs is damage to the sewer line. This damage may worsen if you do not take steps to repair the problem now.

Lights that Flicker Regularly

Some people believe that flickering lights are the result of a brownout from the power plant, strong winds or other factors outside of their home. In some cases, flickering lights could indicate damaged wires inside your walls or even an overloaded circuit breaker. These issues are a fire risk, so they require immediate attention. As part of your regular home maintenance plan, contact an electrician to inspect your system and to determine if any repair or maintenance work is needed.

Missing Shingles

Shingles can blow off of your roof during strong windstorms or even when tree branches brush against them. A missing shingle or two may seem like a minor issue that is easy to overlook. However, your roof must be perfectly intact in order for it to be as protective as possible. Even one missing shingle may make your roof more vulnerable to damage in the future. This holds true when the roof is poorly maintained, such as if any of the shingles are buckling or curling.

It is easy to put off home maintenance for another day, but there are many tasks that require immediate or timely attention. Addressing these and other issues as soon as possible may prevent more serious issues from developing in the near future. Consider funding a home repair and maintenance savings account so that you always have money available to address any developing issues that need immediate attention.
