Moving can be really stressful and overwhelming experience, especially when you don’t know what to start with and how to fit into the determined deadlines without forgetting to do something highly important.

That’s why it’s necessary to remember about the most essential things everyone should do before moving into a new home in order to relieve the stress levels of the move, make the new place as comfortable and homely as it can be since the first day of staying there and make sure that you’re not left with a million and one chores during the last pre-moving days.

Here those things are. Feel free to turn them into a checklist, add your own points and assign professionals from HireRush.com to help you out.

Things to do before moving out

1.       Discover new job opportunities for out-of-the-town moves

If it’s not the job offer that makes you change the cities, make sure to think about your financial situation in advance and start job hunting. It would be quite responsible of you if you could start researching the vacancies that open around your approximate moving day and applying for new jobs (maybe even attending a few job interviews) a couple of months before the move.

Meanwhile, try to save up some money in your moving fund to be prepared for possible emergencies, sudden move-in expenses and the prospect of remaining unemployed for a little while.

2.       Take care of the current place

If you rent the house you’re about to move out,  make sure that the condition you’ll leave it in meets the provisions of your tenancy agreement.

For instance, if there’re any holes in the walls you’re supposed to patch before moving out, make sure to do that on your own or hire a handyman for that matter. So, look check in with you agreement once again and conduct all required fix-ups. Get your landlord’s approval as well.

3.      Schedule the move with the moving company beforehand

That’s an obvious one, but it’s rather important to contact a reliable moving company and book its services at least a month ahead not to pay extra fees for emergency move, but maybe even get discounts.

Besides, the earlier you find the movers, the more time you’ll have to go over numerous transporting, loading, unloading and packing details, or to make some adjustments to the deal (like, the time the movers have to come to your house to pick up stuff, the number of boxes you’ll have to use, etc.).

4.       4. Pack necessities separately

Unless, the moving company you hired is going to do that for you, you’re not going to be able to unpack the entire house the day you move. In addition to that, truck delays often happen during the long-distance moves.

That’s why packing a box with the items you’ll need the most during the first days in you new house and bringing it to the place in your own car will be really helpful. Bring a couple of outfits and one pair of PJs for each member of your family, disposable table wear, personal hygiene stuff, food and bowls for your pets if you have any, basic cleaning supplies and, of course, all of your documents.

5.      Cancel your subscriptions and connect your new house to the Internet

Make a list of companies you need to call (like, home phone company, electricity, gas, water, garbage removal, cable TV, newspaper delivery, etc.) and make sure to ask their representatives to shut the services down after the moving date.

Not applying for the Internet connection early enough common mistake people make when moving houses. Most of us don’t realize how much time Internet companies take to sing someone up for a new plan and ensure Internet connection to the house. Thus, once people move in, they might wait anything between several days to several weeks before they get their WiFi. Those, who work from home, feel the inconvenience the most.

So, make sure to call the provider and discuss the conditions of them providing Internet to your future home as soon as you sign your tenancy agreement or buy a house. If you use cable TV, take care of that as well.

6.      Schedule a professional clean-up

The last thing you’ll have desire to do after going through the tiring moving process is scrubbing your new house from top to bottom.

However, if you call a house cleaning company and schedule the move-in clean-up, you won’t have to think about the dirt and the germs its previous owners/tenants left in there (no matter how clean the house looks), as well as about getting everything cleaned after the moving guys unload your possessions.

7.       Change your legal address and reconnect utilities

Just as you’re supposed to turn all the services off before moving out of your current place, the previous tenants/owners of the premises you’ve chosen to move in had to shut that all off.

Remember to ask your landlord or the person you’ve bought the house from to give you the contacts of the companies that provide utilities to your new house, call them and ask to reconnect everything a few days before the moving day. In most cases, those contacts will be mentioned in your contract. But double-checking won’t harm you.

Notifying your bank, car insurance company and superannuation fund about the fact that you’re moving places and giving them your new address is rather important as well. Giving that information to the businesses you work with and government agencies will help you avoid mail inconvenience.

Oh, if you’re still subscribed to newspaper/magazine delivery, make sure to give them your new address as well.
