There are lots of options to consider when you’re in the market for a new mattress. Construction technology has come in a long way in recent years, and now you have different materials and firmness ratings to choose from to maximize your comfort.

A good night’s sleep is a goal for everyone, and one of the healthiest habits you can develop says The Foam Factory. There are many factors that influence how well one rests, from room temperature to electronic device use. One of the most important determinants of sleep quality, and one often overlooked, is the quality of the mattress you sleep upon. When considering the type of mattress, there are two common choices: latex or memory foam, both attractive in their way.

Latex mattresses are tried and true, having come to the US market in the 1950s. Healthy and eco-friendly, natural latex mattress foam is a popular choice among the environmentally conscious. Raw latex is harvested from the sap of rubber trees, and from that process, latex foam is crafted. Alternatively, a cheaper solution might be synthetic latex, a chemically derived version. The cost savings of synthetic foam are balanced against some observed lack of durability and mattress bounce as compared to the natural latex.

Still, another type of mattress topping is memory foam. Memory foam is an artificially created layer derived from polyurethane. The term “memory foam” comes from the mattress’s unique ability to absorb the pressure of weight placed upon and retain its comforting support and shape. As such, a memory foam mattress will retain its structure and relative comfort much longer than other mattresses, such as latex.
