How Roofing Contractor Insulates Your Roof Properly

No one knows, the heat rises and escapes in large part through the roof, especially if it is not well insulated. Roof insulation improves comfort, greatly reduces heating costs and can help reduce noise pollution.

In addition, roofs alone account for nearly 30% of the total heat losses of single-family houses and nearly 70% for semi-detached houses.

Given the staggering growth in the price of energy and the societal role that everyone must play to combat global warming, the potential for improvement is enormous. Especially for those who want to renovate their roof. The growing demand for thicker, better quality insulation and quick and easy installation shows that there is growing awareness of the environmental benefits and the significant cost savings that can be achieved.

The Under-roof

The choice of the sub-roof is not negligible, because it must be a resistance to the passage of rising heat.

The role of the contractor, often alone to advise his client in the context of renovations, is therefore crucial.

Between the frame and the lathing supporting the roof covering (tiles, slates and so on), we place a microporous under-roof. This protection, in the form of a synthetic film or thin plates, must be impermeable to water, but not to steam. It must provide a greater airtightness; prevent infiltration of snow or water, following a cracked tile or slate; for example, the under-roof directs all these infiltrations towards the gutters.

The Flat Roof

There are four types of flat roofs, the type of which is determined by the position of the waterproofing in relation to the insulation used.

Cold roofing: has been used for many years, but is no longer used today because it cannot avoid condensation in the ventilated space and leaves thermal bridges around the insulation. It increases the thermal shock and the risk of cracks in the ceiling and in the roof support.

The hot roof: consists of placing the vapor barrier and insulation above the roof support and covering it with a tight liner.

The inverted roof: is a version of the hot roof, but it involves placing the insulation above the waterproofing. In this case, we do not need a vapor barrier, because it is the seal that plays this role.

The hybrid system: consists of placing the insulation in two layers, one under the seal and the other against the bottom wall of the roof support.

The Pitched Roof

As a reminder, the hot air rises and, without insulation, it escapes through the spaces between the tiles, resulting in a loss of much of the energy.

In addition to being rainproof, the contractor must ensure that it is properly insulated. For this reason, before laying the tiles, a plastic film is fixed on the whole wooden frame. Then, under the frame (attic side), a mattress of mineral wool is placed, for example, some mattresses are covered on one side, a sheet of aluminum. These are resistant to the diffusion of water vapor, while ensuring a better indoor climate.
