How to Find Reasonable Accommodations While Traveling Abroad

Just about everyone wants to travel and see the world. The biggest problem? Affording it can be a challenge. Whether you’re traveling for pleasure or you’re participating in a study abroad program that doesn’t include lodging, minimizing the amount of money you spend on accommodations is often crucial. You don’t have to go broke just to get a roof over your head in another country—here are several strategies you can use to save money on accommodations and make the most out of your study abroad program or other trip.

Leverage Hostels

Hostels often get a bad rap, but they can be a great option for accommodations while traveling or studying abroad. Many hostels are geared toward younger travelers, and the rates are often far below the market for hotels and Airbnb in the area. You may have to share a room, but most hostels come equipped with lockers and kitchenettes—you can save money on food and make new friends! Plus, some hostels even have discounts when you stay for more than a week.

Don’t Forget about AirBnB

AirBnB is a good alternative to hotels and hostels in some areas, but it all depends on the relative pricing in the area and the taxes on short term rentals. Some Airbnb rentals also give discounts for longer stays. Even if you don’t use Airbnb for your own accommodations when you travel, however, don’t overlook the possibility of renting out your own place while you’re away.

If you have someone who can take over the hosting duties while you’re away, you can split the proceeds with them and use that money toward your own accommodations. If you live in the United States and you’re traveling or studying abroad in a country like Italy, even a portion of your Airbnb proceeds could pay for your lodging. Just make sure you have someone responsible looking after your place and ensure you’re not breaking any rules by renting your place out.

Have a Set Price that You’re Willing to Pay

Budgeting is key when you’re trying to afford an expensive study abroad program or a longer trip. It’s very easy to be tempted by a fancy hotel or Airbnb you can’t afford. All the bells and whistles might enhance your trip, but you don’t want to come home and find out you’re up to your ears in credit card debt.

Instead of just jumping in and looking at places in all different price ranges, set a price you’re willing to pay. That way, you can filter out all the results that are above that price. You’ll need to know an approximate going rate for the area you’ll be staying in, but once you establish that baseline it becomes a lot easier to say “no” to the place you really can’t afford. Above your budget? Not your new short-term home.

Stick to your Priorities

When you’re looking for a place to live, even in the short term, you’re definitely going to have a list of wants. It’s important to realize which of these are actual necessities, and which are luxuries. Everyone has their own priorities, and you need to figure out what yours are before you start shopping around. For instance, do you absolutely need your own room? Or is it more important to be closer to the city center? You need to set your priorities and stick to them. Otherwise, you may be ultimately disappointed with your experience.

Don’t Get Discouraged

It can be a challenge to find reasonably-priced accommodations abroad. Depending on the country, the cost of living might be much higher than what you’re used to, and accommodations are the biggest expense for most trips. Be patient and don’t get discouraged. There are lots of options and you might just have to do a bit more digging to find the best deal. Get creative and remember to embrace new experiences—it’s one of the biggest reasons to travel, after all.
