Whether you are looking at community senior housing or retirement properties in Dubai (or anywhere else in the world, for that matter), retirement homes are gaining popularity as comfortable housing pop up like mushrooms all over. Furthermore, the baby boomers who are the current generation going into retirement are transforming the industry simply by refusing to be written off. They are not going into retirement essentially, they are transitioning into a slower pace of life all the while retaining engagement, enrichment, experience and enjoyment. Furthermore, the standards of nursing homes have recently taken a downturn and is no longer an appealing nor convincing option for many.
You retain your independence
Unlike living in a nursing home, you will have your independence and pride intact. Retirement communities are based around giving senior citizens a place to work at their own pace. Some might opt for communities that provide competitive sporting events such as tennis (for the active athlete) or something a little calmer such as Bingo (no matter how stereotypical it may be, Bingo remains a top elderly favorite). Furthermore, each community comes with their own requirements. You may have to be above a certain age in order to move in, etcetera.
Do your research prior to moving in
When picking a community suitable for oneself, instead of merely looking at the admission requirements, you should also take a look at the median age. You do not want to be the only 80 year old in a community of 50 year olds, or the other way around. A mix of people from all ages would be ideal but generally people want to hang out with those about their own age so that they can still be relevant to each other and perhaps have the same level of activity. It is not quite realistic to expect your neighbour who is 30 years your senior to go for a high difficulty hike with you. Similarly, if you are more intellectually inclined, perhaps you would do much better in a stimulating environment that emulates a university campus rather than a suburban neighbourhood.
Choosing a different life for yourself
While retirement communities may be on the rise, there is no reason you shouldn’t create your own path. For instance, a group of Millennial women have purchased a home so they can retire together. The seven best friends say that they hope to move in together after they are 60, when their children have grown and they can take care of each other. They have made a pact to each learn a life skill so they will be able to be self sustaining, from gardening to Chinese apothecary and traditional music, the girls are serious in their mission to grow old and pass on together. It sounds like a dream - but it doesn’t have to be something out of a fantasy. You, too, can gather a few of your best friends and purchase a home so you may live out your days in the companionship of your choice.
