After you are done with the last minute shopping, I am sure you kids are excited to have you move all their heavy belongings in and then kick you out at the first sign of freshman that are the opposite sex. Don't feel bad, it happens to every parent. There is this moment where all of the sudden your kid realizes that having your parents around you at college is not cool (unless it is "Parent's Weekend" for their sorority or fraternity, then it's really cool). Don't take this personally, it isn't meant to hurt your feelings. Your little baby has officially begun the next chapter of their life which includes a new amount of freedom they have never had before. So take the next few minutes to smother your child with hugs and kisses with extra intent on embarrassing them in front of their new roommate.

After arriving back at your home, going in their now empty room could cause some depression. You will feel a void as your once chaotic house has started to simmer. Now what? It’s time to begin the next chapter of YOUR life! Here is a list of our top things to do now that your kid is at college:

  1. Take a mini-vacation! You have just successfully raised a kid without killing them. You managed to get them into college and now they are responsible for doing their own laundry, cooking their own meals, and figuring out how to time manage. WHOOOO!

  2. Transform that newly unoccupied room. Your kids are no longer living with you which means their old room is a great space to practice your hobbies. Whether it’s a home gym or a craft room, you now have the ability to spice up your home! Don’t feel guilty, your kids will only be home for a few weeks during the year. You can always pull out their old bed while they are home...

  3. Think about downsizing. You have this big home with room(s) that won’t be used as often. It’s great to have a special room for your kids when they come home on school breaks but that shouldn’t be the determining factor on what makes sense for the family that is still living in the home. Larger homes mean high electricity, water, and maintenance costs. Sometimes downsizing means the lot size and not necessarily the square footage. Either way, something with a little less upkeep can help keep you sane as you spend thousands of dollars on that (well worth it) education your kid is currently receiving. Reducing your mortgage can also mean you can spend the extra money visiting your kid or having them come home for a long weekend. Something you and they will definitely want to do at some point in their college career. Trust us, break ups, bad test grades, and moments of realizing how good they had it at home will be coming your way! Consider taking the first step by getting a FREE 15 Second Home Evaluation here.

Enjoy this exciting time and remember to take lots of photos! Your baby is now officially an adult. Congrats!
