I moved to the beautiful Palm Springs, California desert in 1992 and I LOVE it here, but I did discover one small teeny weeny problem. Where to store all my STUFF?
In Wisconsin, where I moved from, we had wonderful storage in Attics and Basements. When we had no idea where to put something, we just put it in one of these two places and it was out of sight and did not clutter up the main part of the house, but that is not the case now. In our area, we have NO attics or basements, and this created a problem when I first moved here…but I have since learned how to store STUFF in other places!
Here are a few things I have learned about Storing Stuff:
1. Build cabinets with shelving in the garage, or add overhead storage bins. The garage is a great place to store things like luggage, seasonal bedding, holiday wrapping paper and ribbons. You can store pots and pans or items like mixers that you only use occasionally. You can store your turkey roasting pan and extra (just in case you’ll ever need them someday) food storage containers in the garage as well. Add large hooks on the garage walls to store items you can hang stuff. I love my garage storage area and so does my STUFF.
2. Do you have a second refrigerator you can put in the garage? You’ll be amazed what you can store in there.
3. Under the bed storage is also a wonderful place to store things you don’t need every day. No one will see it, and you are the only one who knows you have “treasures” hidden under your bed.
4. Closets are another place to store things. Build shelving high above the clothes and store a few things there as well.
5. Build a bookcase in a bedroom, wide hallway or den with shelving above. The cabinet under the shelving makes a great storage area for hiding your STUFF!
6. Stop buying books and start reading e-books. I fought this idea for years, then finally caved into the idea and now I love reading e-books when I have time (which seems to be seldom).
7. If you have a corner cabinet in your kitchen, are you aware there is a lot of wasted storage space here? A handyman or cabinet person can easily build you a lazy-susan piece in this area and you can store lots of STUFF there as well. I have a kitchen corner area with two bar stools. I realized how much dead-space I had in this area. I had it opened up, and now I have a great place to store items I don’t use every day. I have an attractive door with handle on it that matches my kitchen cabinets, so it looks like part of the kitchen.
8. Here’s another novel idea. Start throwing STUFF you have not used in the past five years away! What are you saving these things for? They are just cluttering up your house and this can clutter up your thought process as well. Get Rid of Them…..NOW! Stop hoarding.
I could go on and on, but to save time and space, I’ll stop here and let you Google “How to find storage space in your home.” Guaranteed, you’ll find plenty of great ways to STORE and HIDE all YOUR STUFF!
