There are many reasons why homeowners sell up and move, and, on average, in the U.S. people do it once every five to seven years. Here are 7top reasons why people decide to sell.

1.       Too small

The first-time homebuyer may find that they’ve outgrown their “starter” home. After all, the first home is frequently the place for a newly-married couple. Along come kids and there’s no doubt about it, it’s time for something larger.

2.       Upgrade

It’s human nature to want what you do not have, and when you see what the neighbor has, you want just the same or bigger still. That, after all, is the American way – think big, want bigger.

3.       A Purchase Error

Seems a little strange, but it’s certainly true. Many people believe they’ve made a mistake after they’ve purchased a home. For example, it’s a hot sunny day and suddenly the desire for a pool in the backyard becomesa desperate yearning. Or it could be something such as the bedrooms seem a little too cramped for their needs.

4.       New Job

If commuting to work is in excess of an hour in terms of a one-way journey, it could make good sense to relocate closer to the place of work. After all, two hours or more in heavy traffic, five or even six days each week, is not an attractive consideration.

5.       Relationships

If you’ve finally decided to move in with your partner, or indeed, vice versa, and you’re a homeowner, then it may be a wise move to sell up on the house that’s being vacated. There’s the downside here too, though. Going through a tough time in the marriage? A marriage split can lead to selling up the marital home and downsizing for both parties.

6.       Bad Neighborhood

There may have been a change in the neighborhood that was totally unforeseen. It may now be worse in terms of socially, economically, or physically. Perhaps your neighbors, who were pleasantly peaceful and relaxed, have moved out, only to be replaced by a noisy young family. Maybe there’s plans for a freeway to be constructed nearby. Whatever it is, it could signify the time for a move.

7.       Empty, Large Nest

The kids have fled the nest and the nest now seems empty without them around. You may be aging and keeping a large home clean is becoming a nightmare scenario.
