The way it works is that companies need to have feedback about existing products or new products that are in development. This information is extremely valuable to them so they are prepared to pay you for your opinion. The feed back that they receive is then used to guide the development of the product or even take the company in a different direction. They don't pay that much but it can be a little bit of extra cash if you know what you are doing. Typical rates can be around $10 per hour but you can do the surveys from the comfort of your own bed if you want!
You will be asked about everything from politics to the latest iPhone. It helps if you buy a lot of stuff so that you qualify for the surveys - usually things like technology are good. Things like phones, computers and TV's are quite popular for customer research surveys. Some survey sites will specialize in things like politics but most are quite general and will offer you a qualification survey that only takes a minute to determine if you are within the required demographic for the full survey.
Don't worry if you have a hard time qualifying for enough surveys to make decent income in the beginning. You should sign-up to be emailed by the various sites when surveys become available and this will help you to make more money more quickly. Be sure to sign-up for as many as possible to maximize your income potential.
Paid survey sites typically pay via Paypal, check or ACH. Many have minimum balances that you must achieve before they will make your first payment.
My last bit of advice is to check out reviews of any survey site that you want to try - some are a bit scammy and you don't want to spend 30 mins doing a survey if you will not actually get paid!
