5 Things to Have on Your To-Do List Before Moving

Posted On Friday, 29 September 2023 10:58

Did you know about 13% of Americans move annually? That works out to plenty of relocations.

Whether you need to move for a new job or simply want a bigger or smaller home, moving day can be stressful, no matter how much you prepare. But there are things you can do to ensure everything flows relatively smoothly. It’s about controlling the variables you have control over.

Continue reading to learn about five things you should do to make moving day uneventful. What you’ll find is that it’s all about preparing to get things done rather than procrastinating.

1. Create a Schedule to Keep Yourself on Track

Procrastination is one of the worst things that can happen during the lead-up to moving day. Avoid it like the plague. You may think you have plenty of time to get everything packed up, but the time will go by faster than you realize.

So, create a list of what needs to be done, when you plan to start each task, and when you want to finish things. You can put a checkmark beside every task as you complete them. The key is to get started as soon as possible -- don’t wait until the last minute if you want to keep your cool.

2. Put Together a Moving Kit

It’s also a good idea to assemble a moving day kit. You’ll regret it if you don’t. Your moving kit should include items you'll need during moving day -- things that'll be hard to find during the hustle and bustle of moving day unless you have them assembled in a specific place. Include things like box cutters, cleaning spray, garbage bags, and anything else you'll need on moving day.

3. Get Rid of Excess

You'll also want to get rid of things you won't need to take with you. Go through your stuff and identify what you will take, what you'll give away or sell, and what you'll toss out. When it comes to what you won't take with you, get rid of them as soon as possible. You'll want to clear your home of clutter so that you don't pack and move with clutter. If you need help from family and friends, ask. Clutter is one of the worst obstacles when it comes to moving.

One reason to eliminate clutter before hiring a moving company is to save money. The bigger the truck you need, the more the move will cost. So, why take clutter with you? Doing so will only increase your bill.

4. Label Everything

When you’re loading your boxes, taping them up, and stacking them, don’t forget to label them. If everything is labeled correctly, you’ll make things a lot easier on yourself -- and on the movers if you hire a moving company. Otherwise, things can get chaotic quickly.

5. Hire a Professional Moving Company

If you want moving day to be as problem-free as possible, hire a professional moving company to help. The movers will do all the heavy lifting and help get things from Point A to Point B. Hiring a moving company is essential whether you’re moving to a house, condo, or cottage. You’ll have less on your plate to manage if you enlist the services of a moving company.

Some people seek to save money by renting a moving van and getting help from friends. But that strategy can be headache-inducing if the moving truck is double-booked and unavailable on moving day or if volunteers cancel at the last moment.

Another thing to consider is the need to book early. Don’t wait until the last minute to book a mover. You might be disappointed if you dilly-dally. Once you know you’re moving and have the date worked out, find a reputable mover to help you on moving day.

Real Estate Investment the Easier Way

Whether you’re moving to get your dream home or downsizing after the kids have left the nest, you may need to pack up everything and move. You’ll get through the process better if you’re prepared. Some people move out of their homes, rent them out, and move elsewhere. But you can also stay put and invest in more real estate using an online property investing platform. It can be a great way to diversify your investment strategy in a way that fits your risk profile.

If your moving day is fast approaching, consider these tips. Staying on top of things will make your big day largely uneventful, which is what you want. A bit of preparation will simplify things.
