As realtors, we’re certainly not health experts, but we do know that staying active is vital at any age, and while health goals and needs vary from individual to individual, a good general rule of thumb is to get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week. Spread out over seven days, that’s less than 25 minutes a day. That’s a goal most of us should be able to manage.

Many condo buildings have in-house gyms, but for those not living in such a complex, we thought we’d share three cost-effective ways you can get active this April, no matter whether you’re 25 or just 25 at heart!

1. Get your walking boots on - walking can improve both physical and mental wellbeing, and now that the coldest stretch of winter is (hopefully) behind us, going for a brisk 25-minute walk around your neighbourhood each day is very achievable. Being free, walking is excellent for your wallet too! As an added side benefit, taking a stroll around your block has the potential to make you feel more connected with neighbours and fellow residents. When it comes to getting rid of stress, walking is near the top. I read a quote once that said "If you feel stressed, take a walk. If you're still stressed, then take another walk".

2. Swim your way to better health - swimming has the power to increase your heart rate, build muscle and improve your mood, but crucially, it is also less stressful on the body than many other forms of exercise. Also, as the pool water helps to regulate your body temperature, there’s the additional benefit of swimming being a ‘sweat-free’ way of working out.

3. Bust a move - studies show that dance is not only good for you physically, but it can also have a positive impact on your brain. In fact, dancing is now being used to help treat individuals who have Parkinson’s disease. Also, if you take up a dance, not only will you be getting active and staying fit, you’ll also be learning a new skill.

It’s essential that your living situation suits your lifestyle. Of course, as you move into new phases of life, your property needs evolve and change. It’s important to find an agent who specializes in navigating this change. No matter whether you’re looking to downsize and move into a complex with an in-house gym or purchase a larger family home,  consult with your trusted Realtor early in the process.
