TV buying guide: What to look for when buying a TV in 2020

Posted On Wednesday, 23 December 2020 13:35

Until a few years back, buying a TV was merely a walk in the park because the only thing we needed was to buy the largest screen you could afford, and that was it. But things are totally different today. With so much jargon such as OLED, 4K, SUHD, and Quantum Dots, choosing the right TV is becoming such an exhausting task as you might be confused on which TV technology to invest in. Not to mention that prices could vary for screens of the same size, and when you ask the retailers why, they will tell you that some have alien-sounding technologies and additional features that place them above others and make them more expensive.

To make things more bearable for you, we went hunting and cooked a small but comprehensive TV buying guide that will answer most of your burning questions.

Wait until November for crazy TV prices.

The next day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday, where things are sold at a throwaway price, and TVs are no exception. The best and current TVs' prices are cut, and you could find yourself buying one half of the price you could purchase now. To spice it more, the prices remain low throughout the holidays until New Year. What's more, high-end sets are decreasedto nearly 20 – 40 percent compared to when they were released, and you could even find some at lower prices than that. Yet, it's smarter to get something worth your hard-earned money. But if you just can't wait to grab that fancy OLED, you can always get those store credit cards for bad credit.

Don't let specification confuse you.

All TVs come with specifications, which in one way or the other is to confuse you and drive you into buying a more expensive TV. When you feel the need to drain your bank account just because one screen has better specifications than the one you wanted first, just ignore them. However, the sheet is of great help in looking for TV based on characteristics, such as a smart TV, a fancy remote, or HDR.

In 2020, technology is cheaper, and the quality of improving dramatically. That said, your TV screen size matters, and since most people define you by the TV size they find in your living room, it's time to upgrade and choose the right size for you and those you love. As always, deciding the size to buy and specifications depends on how far you will be from the screen, but a bigger size is better built around the viewing experience. The best possible scenario would be to consider a screen of at least 55 inches for your living room TV and at least 40 inches for your bedroom TV. However, most shoppers consider a 65 inches screen to be a perfect size for the living room as it enhances the viewing experience for you and your family.

4K and HDR are the norm

TVs with 4K resolution have pixels that are expected to be four times that of standard 1080p resolution televisions –the more pixels, the better the resolution and the sharper the picture quality. That's definitely something to consider when buying a TV, but you can hardly distinguish the sharpness between a 4K TV and HDTV. 4K TVs are easy to produce, and for this reason, they are more affordable. For example, you can get Vizio and a 4K 65-inch TCL for just $800 compared to LC TVs and Samsung that reach $1000. But shoppers don't know that the 4K UHD has been around 2003 and that YouTube started supporting it in 2010.

Smart TVs: While a few years back, a TV was nothing more than a screen, today things are different, and if you're looking to buy a screen that lacks smart features, most likely you're missing out. Smart TVs make us feel that we have a PC instead of television because it allows us to freely access a wide range of apps, websites, online gaming, and numerous social media platforms. Before this year comes to an end, invest in a Smart Tv, and have a taste of otherworldly experiences.

Voice control

Smart technology is getting better every day, and televisions have not been left behind. In 2020 you can find a TV remote with built-in-mics and "push to talk" functionality. Speaking of new, the trendiest thing in town that most techies are talking about is the integration between Amazon and Google, and TVs. Perhaps you've already heard about LG 2019-20 smart TVs – they come with a Google Assistant built-in, which gives you an opportunity to use their voice remotes to order pizza, search your favorite channels, play music and trivia games, control other smart home devices and moderate lights around you.

HDR: Get if you need the most colors

The new HDR stands for high dynamic ranges and is a fresh feature of the 4K Ultra HD sets, a reference to its ability to provide more contrast levels, more colors, and increased brightness. In essence, HDR is an upgrade of the Ultra HD or 4K format (which is not relevant to 1080 HD sets).

For this new hallmark, TV manufacturers are launching new nicknames for the products to differentiate them from standard 4K Ultra HD TVs. As we mentioned earlier, technology is now at its best, and the competition is becoming stiff with smaller devices such as Smartphones and tablets providing mobile viewing experiences for the go-user, thereby placing more pressure on TV makers to improve the home experience. With that in mind, it's important to invest in a TV based on new technologies. In this case, HDR is great if you look for innovative viewing experiences based on contrasts, colors, and brightness.

It could be that your old television is getting embarrassingly old or is broken, or maybe you just need a classy TV to match your persona. Either way, 2020 it's the perfect time to upgrade and purchase a TV with the latest and cutting-edge tech that will boost the elegance in your home.
