How to Move House on a Budget

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 14 November 2017 12:03

Whether you are renting or buying, moving home can be expensive. In addition to deposits and legal costs, you also have to pay to move your possessions, and you may need to take time off work. If you need to move on a budget, you may be struggling with how you can move without spending a fortune. But thankfully, it is possible to move without it costing too much.

Here are some tips to help you move house on a budget.

Track Your Costs

There are often a lot of little expenses when you move, such as packaging or stopping for food on moving day, and it can be easy to spend more than you realise. To avoid this, make a budget and keep a list of every cost you incur, no matter how small.

Save on Packing Materials

Buying boxes and wrapping materials can be expensive, but there are ways to get these for free. You could ask friends and family for spare boxes, recycle old packing you may have at home, ask your boss if there are any boxes at work, put out a post on social media, or check at your local stores.

Get Rid of Clutter

Can you believe that the average family home in America contains more than 300,000 objects and items. On top of that, many people have items in a storage facility, too. That means we have a lot of things to move.

Most homes contain items that are never used and are simply taking up space. Before you move, have a clear out and donate or sell your clutter. This means there will be less for you to pack and you could make money to put towards moving costs.

Do it Yourself

Leaving the move to professionals is the easiest and least stressful option, but it's also the most expensive. The DIY route is the cheapest way to move, but it does require some hard work.

Borrowing a trailer or a truck from a friend is the best option, as the only cost you will incur is gas. If you are unable to borrow, fill up your car with smaller items and book a pallet service to move boxes and larger items.

Moving home can be stressful and expensive but it does not need to be. Plan in advance and follow these tips, to help you save money and move home on a budget.
