After a recent house inspection we were tasked with, I came across yet another dingy, musty basement that simply reeked. Almost too much to bare.

It got me thinking. There must be a fairly quick way to make this more habitable without having to start ripping the basement apart. I knew an air purifier would be the best option, but the tiny thing I have in my bedroom wouldn't make a dent on this cavenous basement. I needed something capable of handling a really large room.

After some extensive research, I now have my answer. And the subject of todays review....The Coway Airmega.

Big and Smart: Coway Airmega 400S Review

In the 21st century, the number of smart devices in each home is going up every day. If you are looking for a smart air purifier, you have a wide selection to take advantage of. One of such devices is Coway’s flagman Airmega 400S.

Besides a high-quality filtration system, an excellent design, and the ability to service rooms up to 1,560 square feet, this air purifier is Wi-Fi operated.

Airmega 400S is a top-choice air purifier for many homeowners. It does have a few downsides, which seem to pale next to the benefits. In any case, let’s go through all the pros and cons of this unit in order to get a clear picture. Is this purifier worth the formidable price Coway is asking for it?

Keeping The Air Clean: Three-Stage Filtration System

What is the most important part of the air purifier? Its filters, of course. It can have a stellar design and numerous useful buttons, but if it doesn’t clean the air, it’s not worth your attention.

Coway Airmega 400S has an impressive filtration system, which deals with 99.97% of contaminants 0.3 microns in diameter as well as odors and smoke. The system includes four filters:

  • Two pre-filters – these washable filters capture large particles to make the job easier for the rest of the system

  • TrueHEPA filter – this filter captures the smallest articles, helping keep the air clean for allergy and respiratory problem sufferers.

  • Activated carbon filter- this filter is designed to reduce odors and fight VOCs and harmful gasess and harmful gases.

TrueHEPA and activated carbon filter come in one set. They have to be changed at least once a year, depending on how heavily you use the air purifier.

The downside of this filtration system is the cost of the replacement filters. It can go up to about $130. Which is not too high compared to the purifier’s price tag but pretty formidable when you compare it to other filter options.

On the other hand, the majority of filters in other purifiers need to be replaced every six to nine months. So the annual maintenance costs aren’t as high as they seem.

Overall, the filters do an excellent job keeping the air clean. It’s worth noting that the set of filters used by Coway aren’t any different from the filtration options offered by the majority of other companies.

Smarter Than You Think: Numerous Modern Options

Why does this air purifier have such a high price tag? The reason is inside. The air purifier is virtually packed with smart options, making it almost as smart as your smartphone.

If the filtration system is similar to other models, the contents are definitely special.

  1. Remote Operation

The air purifier is compatible with a special Coway Airmega app for iPhone and Android. You can also operate it using Amazon Alexa. So now, you can manage your unit even if you are away from home. This is an excellent option for people, who forget to turn the air purifier off or want it to start working when they are on the way home.

  1. Eco-Friendly Air Quality Sensor

Low-budget air purifiers rarely have such a sensor. It allows you not to worry about the purifier’s settings. The unit monitors the air on its own and adjusts the fan speed accordingly. All you have to do is turn the air purifier on. It does the rest.

The air purifier helps you reduce money spent on energy bills. It has an eco-mode, which closely monitors the air quality in order not to run the fan more than necessary.

  1. Sleep Mode

Sleep mode is a vital option for light sleepers, who need an air purifier in the bedroom. When activated, it reduces the fan speed, thus keeping the noise as low as possible.

Even though the sleep mode doesn’t dim the lights, you can turn them off using an app without getting off your bed.

Aesthetic Appeal: Excellent Design Work

Coway did an excellent job with the design of Airmega 400s. It’s not too small (22.8 inches high). However, it fits well into any décor. The unit comes with a handle, which simplifies transportation. The air purifier weighs about 25 pounds.

Since it’s a smart device, this purifier doesn’t have too many buttons, which makes it look even better. The air quality monitoring circle gives this air purifier an interesting and intriguing appearance.

Pros:

  • Services large rooms (up to 1,000 – 1,500 square feet)

  • Has a solid filtration system

  • Smart operation

  • Air quality sensor and sleep mode

  • Excellent design

Cons:

  • Tall and heavy

  • High filter replacement costs

Final Thoughts: To Buy Or Not To Buy?

Coway Airmega 400S is an expensive but highly useful air purifier. It’s an excellent choice for people, who need high-quality filtration coupled with convenient smart options. This purifier is perfect for large homes and offices.
