One of my Executive Editors contacted me this week and asked if I would consider researching and preparing an article on the new confusing 5G, which means the fifth generation of cellular wireless. It seems folks are trying to decide if they need to buy new phones or even change carriers and nobody is actually breaking 5G information down to the average consumer – that’s my new job!
After a few hours of research, learning new geek language and sorting through very confusing articles, I am prepared to say the following:
You Don’t Need to BUY a New Phone or Change Carriers for the Next Few Months!
I am still in the process of understanding all the benefits of 5G and how it will impact all of us. No doubt 5G will improve certain parts of our personal and professional life, BUT NOT TODAY! A majority of us live in areas that will not see 5G for many months or even years. Your current 4G phone will continue to operate just fine and, actually some of the upgrades the carriers are doing will enhance and improve 4G coverage.
I have decided to do a monthly article on 5G moving forward as the phone carriers decide the direction they intend to go. I will translate the geek to down to earth terms to explain why, how and if it will affect you. This isn’t a paper planner to Palm moment or dumb phone to smartphone moment in technology history, but it will be a step forward as we start talking about real time data exchange needed for autonomous vehicles, gaming and medical to name a few areas that 5G will impact.
So, bottom line you need to do nothing, if 5G comes up in conversation you can tell them they need to do nothing and I will let you know when and what you need to do when the time comes!
