The Importance of Protected Escape Routes in Populated Buildings

Any large building, whether residential or business, needs to take proper precautions against fire. This is particularly pertinent in tall buildings, such as blocks of apartments or large office blocks. From functional sprinkler systems to non-flammable panels and cladding, it's key that fire-safety is properly considered during any construction or refurbishment. One crucial element to consider is the route of escape for any person inside a building in the event of a fire. Fires can spread incredibly quickly, potentially leaving any people in the building trapped, as recent tragedies such as the Grenfell Tower fire demonstrated all too painfully.

Should a fire break out in a tall building, it's important that those inside are able to move quickly and safely through the building, without suffering injury via heat, smoke or exposure to flames. Not only is a well-designed fire escape route crucial to this end, but the materials used in the construction of these routes is crucial in preventing the spread of fire from one area to another, as well as ensuring internal fire escapes are properly protected

Not only does this provide a safe, quick route out of the building for those inside, but also allows fire fighters and emergency personnel a route into the building, which can prove critical in effectively dealing with a fire and stopping it spreading to adjacent buildings.

But how can developers and construction firms ensure fire escapes are properly protected? Not only should fire-resistant materials be used, but it's important that any fire escape is open and well lit, particularly during times of panic. This makes glass the ideal material, ensuring escapes feel open and bright, and that people can clearly see what's going on around them. Of course, glass may not seem like the ideal material to protect people from fire, but construction firms and local councils can look to specially developed fire-resistant glass (such as Pilkington Pyrostop), which not only prevents the spread of fire, but protects those on the non-fire side from smoke, flames and heat.

So if you live in a residential building or work in a tall office block, ensure your fire escapes are properly protected and you know the quickest route out of the building. It could make all the difference should the worst happen.
