What Do Parents Look For In a Custom Home?

Written by Posted On Monday, 15 May 2017 08:09

Building a custom home? Have kids? Here are the top requested features that custom home builders say parents adore!

Built-In Storage

No one can ever claim to have too much storage. Kids come with a lot of items so having dedicated places to put them is important. Closets, bookcases, shelves and other storage solutions will all be helpful to keeping your life organized.

Charging Station

Today, kids are spending more times on tablets and other electronic devices than ever before. Having a designated charging station means you’ll always know where the devices are.

Open Floor Plan

Almost everyone requests an open floor plan, but parents do it for a reason. This style of layout allows parents to do tasks while still keeping an eye on their children. Even as children get older this floor plan works great for entertaining, plus it will boost resale value.

Play Space

Kids come with a lot of stuff, especially toys. A dedicated play space will help reduce the noise and clutter in the other portions of the house. Home builders suggest creating a playroom with French doors. These will allow for sight lines but reduce noise.

Mud Room

There’s nothing worse than being greeted by a pile of bags, shoes, and coats. A mudroom is a dedicated place for kids to drop off school bags, shoes, and jackets. Parents find it helps with the morning scramble too as everything is always in one place.

Laundry Room

Kids, no matter their age, go through a lot of clothing. A dedicated laundry room will definitely not go to waste. Home builders say you should consider layout. Do you want it near the bedrooms or a part of the mudroom? Make room for space to fold too.

Fenced Yard

No matter the size of your yard consider getting it fenced in. A fenced yard reduces the chances of your kids wandering away. It makes your yard safer, more private, and reduces the noise that reaches your neighbors.

 Attached Garage

Life with an attached garage is so much easier for a parent. It’s safer for the kids, it keeps them warmer and cleaner, and it makes generally easier. Ever tried to get a toddler into a house with an arm full of groceries? An attached garage makes that so much simpler.
