Winter is approaching, it is important to take care of seasonal maintenance so that your home stays in excellent condition for the next few months. In this article, I have prepared a list to help homeowners to prepare their homes for winter.

Windows and doors

It is the best time of the year to make sure your doors and windows are well sealed. Protect the interior of your home from winter weather by observing the air inlets through the windows and doors, sealing around the windows and the door frames, and installing or repairing the door and window weatherstrips to prevent air inlets or outlets and heat, thus making your home more efficient.

Electric water heaters

Avoid running out of hot water in the winter. Consider insulating your electric water heater if it is placed outside or somewhere cold to help save energy. It is also important to periodically check the seals and gaskets of your hot water thermos for leaks or breakages before it becomes a big problem.

Exterior plumbing

To prevent pipes from bursting in cold climates, drain and close irrigation sprinkler systems and other water lines that will not be used during winter. If you are not going to use outdoor and gardening hoses in the coming months, it is also a good idea to drain them and store them in a dry place with no items.

Chimney cleaning

If you have a wood stove or other heating systems, this is also a good time to clean and check the condition of the chimney and avoid bad combustion and smoke escapes.

Sewers, gutters, and downspouts

Dirt, leaves and other accumulations in roof gutters and downspouts as well as in patio and exterior drains can cause jams, so be sure to clean them regularly. To facilitate the work, consider installing gutter filters or other solutions that cover the channels.

Roof maintenance

Inspect all roof penetrations including roof openings, chimneys, and skylights to check if the cement around them is still attached. Any separation can create water leakage. Also, detect loose tiles and apply roof cement to secure each one in perfect position. In this way, by performing regular maintenance you can maximize your roof’s lifespan.

Basements and garages

If your home has a basement, check the possible entry of water or air, especially during cold or rainy seasons, so this is the best time to look for leaks and cracks in the walls and windows of your basement. Your storage room is another area that needs routine cleaning. If you have a bilge pump for possible water inlets, check its condition and correct operation.
