Private cloud or public cloud. Which one to choose? What are the advantages of the private cloud for a medium or small client that needs customized cloud solutions? Why or when to choose the private cloud versus the public or the classic cloud computing solution?

The world of data and communications in IT

The IT managers have historically been walking between the world of data and communications, particularly in regard to voice and applications. This aspect has been mandatory given the technical characteristics and the lack of availability of the technology so that they could work together.

On the one hand, if we talk about the Data Center or Data Processing Center, with its servers, and other hardware components, together with the business applications that run on them, we talk about mission-critical applications. It is the key element where all the necessary resources for the processing of the information that an organization needs to manage its business are concentrated.

On the other hand, we have the world of telephony. Here, voice applications allow all workers in the organization to communicate with each other, in very different ways, confirming that the information is received and processed. Even in a highly technological environment, such as today, voice communications remain a fundamental pillar of the business.

Managing these two worlds is not an easy task since it involves the duplicity of budgets and groups of people with different profiles, and different technological infrastructures to adapt, deploy and maintain. It has to be done in this way since data and voice applications have different requirements and vary in the way they are managed.

Is the public cloud a good solution?

One of the options can be the public cloud so that this type of solution solves the basic needs of the UC. There are many providers that through the cloud provide UC industrialized solutions that are very valid for that type of user to focus on the business and not on the management of these technologies. However, the profile, SMEs of this type of end user is in many cases circumspect to the facilities provided by the provider, which in some organizations does not cover all the needs of the same.

Neither do we refer to a "classic" cloud computing solution for that type of corporation user that can design private solutions tailored to their own data centers.

The private cloud as the best solution

The best solution for cases with that type of medium or even small customer that needs tailored solutions and that providers can only offer with large budgets is the private cloud.

For this reason, for a type of organization like Singapore cloud accounting that has its own data center and even a hybrid cloud solution, a UC solution can be valid in the context of a private cloud. It is not a private cloud storage in which UCC applications are simply hosted as isolated virtual machines. We are talking about a private cloud in which the UCC virtual machines are integrated with the hypervisor so that the management of them is done like others through their own management tools.

Advantages of the private cloud

The advantages of this type of architecture are remarkable:

  • By reducing the total number of servers in the private cloud, you save considerable investment costs.
  • The consolidation of servers also allows savings in operational costs by reducing the space needed to accommodate the hardware and energy needed to power and cool it.
  • IT managers who needed to develop two contingency and business continuity plans - one for the data and one for the voice - can now encompass their entire IT infrastructure in a single plan.
  • Also, with regard to cloud backup services, I simply add the UCC virtual machines that I already had. If not, you can design an even more personalized plan.
  • Likewise, they only need to define service level agreements, processes, and tools for a single infrastructure.
  • A single way of managing servers and applications in the data center helps improve the efficiency of all IT areas, including testing, development and production-to-production environments.
  • In addition to reducing the total cost of ownership of the IT infrastructure, the private cloud for the UCCs along with the rest of the business applications of the organization improves the responsiveness of the IT environment against new orientations in the business model motivated by the continuous changes experienced by voice, data and video environments. That is, I can design customized solutions according to current and future needs.

In summary, the IT manager will see their infrastructures and resources differently. Instead of managing individual machines, they can move on to managing a complete IT service. Instead of spending most of their budget on maintenance, they can use it for innovation. The resources and personnel traditionally used to maintain two infrastructures can now be used to develop new applications and services that bring competitive advantages to the organization. Even, through a UCC solution that can be federated in our CPD, we can evolve to a hybrid cloud option incorporating backup and DRaaS in the public cloud. And finally, we will provide a better service, at a much lower cost, to users who use applications that include voice, data, and video.
