Do you have a job transfer or have to move to South East Michigan because of a new job? South East Michigan is a great place to live and I believe everybody that moves here is amazed at how much South eastern Michigan has to offer. It's not all gloom and doom like some of the dramatic national new portrays. You will find that metro Detroit is probably a lot like your home town.
Most of the communities in the suburbs of Detroit are very safe. We do not have gangs roaming the streets. You do not have to worry about car jackings, muggings, or your home being robbed in the suburbs of metro Detroit. The city of Detroit you may have issues, but many of the communities in Detroit suburbs are very safe. Sure they have random crimes. There may be domestic disputes, an occasional home break in, or some vandalism from kids. But it is random. Murder is rare.
So what are the best cities to live in the suburbs of Detroit?
The key is what are you looking for?
Are you a millenial looking for a community that has a good night life? Then Royal Oak or Ferndale may be the place to check out. Are you looking for a community that is near the airport or has easy highway accesss? They you will be glad to know that Metro Detroit has a wonderful highway and street system. Many of the roads run North - south or east west from one side of Detroit to the other. Yes we have traffic jams but nothing like Chicago, LA, or New York. It all depends on where you work. There will be some good cities to choose from wherever you live in the suburbs. You can find some excellent cities within a half hour of the airport.
Are looking for a gay friendly town? Ann Arbor, Ferndale, and Royal Oak are just a few of them. Are you looking to be close to the mall and major shopping? We have malls in Troy, Shelby, Novi, Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Livonia, Westland, and Taylor. You won't be lacking of any store. Teh we have some historic city centers like Plymouth, Farmington, Northville, 
Milford, Rochester, and Birminghams to name a few. Great areas to go for boutque stores and local restaurants. Non chain type of stores and restaurants. Most of the major national big box stores are here. Another great part of metro Detroit is that we do have so many different ethnic groups. You will find stores and restaurants catering to so many different cultures and religions. So whether you are Middle Eastern,Asian, Indian, Italian, Greek, Muslim, Jewish, Mexican, or Chinese there is probably a grocery store, bakery, or multiple restaurants that you can go to. We do have some areas that have higher concentrations of certain ethnic groups like most major cities do.
There are so many criteria that you may have. It is all about you and what you and your family want in a home and community. Most communties are either close to County and State parks, and have many parks of their own. One of the best parts of metro Detroit is that you are never too far from a lake. You can be on the water in less than a half hour from most of the cities in Metro Detroit.
But let's just base what are the best cities in the suburbs of Metro Detroit on safety and good schools. I have a list below of many great places to chose from. This is an incomplete list as there are so many communites with good schools, good city services, easy high access, and low crime rates that you may love.
