Maintaining healthy grass takes a lot of effort and time, but the gorgeous looking lawn is worth the time. When drought or heat comes in, lawn turns brown and appears dead. Seasonal dormancy is normal for both cold and warm climate.
The best method to revive dead grass is to take care of it continuously. A lawn which is well-watered mowed properly and free of weeds will experience less dormancy.
If your lawn is looking dead or brown, here’s how to revive it.
- 1.Scarify
Just as we scale off the skin to get rid of the dead skin, your grass also needs some care to get rid of dead grass, fungi, and moss. You can use a spring-tine rake to prepare your dead grass for re-seeding.
- 2.Re-seed
During the autumn or spring season, you can sow new grass seed. Although sowing will take time to produce optimum results but is a widely used and cheaper option for large areas. Watering well your lawn before sowing seed, and then don’t water it again until the next shoots appear.
- 3.Mow regularly
Mow your grass regularly. The more you mow, the faster your grass will grow. Mow at least once in every two weeks in the spring season, and once a week in summer. Set the blade of the mower accurately.
Make sure that it isn’t set too low; otherwise, the soil will dry out too quickly. Don’t scalp the lawn when trying to remove dead grass. Let the fresh new grass grow around these brown grasses.
- 4.Aeration
Buy power tools online such as power aerator or power rake and set the depth control knob. Slowly move the aerator across straight lines. After aerating the soil, move power rake across the dead grass. Power rakes are self-propelled, so, handle them carefully with a sturdy grip.
Aeration system increases drainage in the lawns and allows the oxygen to reach to roots of the grass. If you have a large lawn, then use mechanical core aerator in the lawn instead of aerator machine. Follow the instruction provided in the instruction manual and operate it safely and effectively.
- 5.Feed it
Use lawn fertilizers that are available for different types of grass. Fertilizers are the most important ingredients to bring back your grass back to life. But remember, apply it when your grass is growing and never apply it on the newly sown grass; otherwise, the grass will turn brown.
- 6.Watering
Lawns and dead grass require watering regularly to make sure it stays fresh and green. Rainwater helps in reviving dead grass. However, if rainwater is not sufficient for your grass, then watering it once a week will be helpful in breathing new life the dead grass.
Set your water sprinkler at slow release setting. It is better to water your grass for a longer period of time with a slow release setting than for a short period of time with fast release setting.
Reviving dead grass will only take a little love and care. But the results are worth making an effort.
