COVID-19 misinformation

The global pandemic has pushed the world into a state of uncertainty. There is lots of misinformation out there, especially on social media. Even world leaders can provide suspect advice. In times like this, it's important to be aware of the facts and follow advice based on science. Here are some guidelines and cleaning tips from TidyChoice.

Coronavirus lifespan

Studies have found that Coronavirus can live on different surfaces for different periods of time. It can survive up to 72 hours on plastic, 48 hours on stainless steel, 24 hours on cardboard and 4 hours on copper. Because it remains viable on surfaces, it is vital that we regularly sanitise and disinfect plastic, metal and other surfaces in our homes to prevent the spread of potentially harmful germs and bacteria.

High Risk Areas

Some high-touch areas require regular disinfecting to minimise the exposure of germs that could be harmful to you and those around you.

Ensure items like lightswitches, door and cabinet handles and TV remotes are constantly cleaned. This is due to their frequent use which can increase our contact with germs and bacteria that could be harmful to our health.

Other surfaces like countertops, tables and the bathroom should also be sanitised regularly. This can help reduce the spread of any germs around the home, especially, in the kitchen where these surfaces come in contact with our food.

The bathroom typically gathers more bacteria than any other room in the home. It is important that all surfaces and high-touch items like handles or taps are wiped down and disinfected.

Aim to have these areas cleaned regularly, especially in busy households, to ensure that germs are not spread amongst you and your family or friends. The more frequent the use, the more often it should be sanitised or disinfected.

How to Kill Coronavirus

There are different ways to kill Coronavirus and germs that could be harmful to your health.

Soap is the most common way to do this. Washing hands regularly for up to 20 seconds each time, with warm water and soap can protect you from bacteria. Soap dissolves and breaks down the fat membrane of viruses which leaves them exposed and gradually kills them.

Alcohol based products can also help in tackling the virus. However, only 60% alcohol products like disinfectant liquids or hand sanitisers are suitable in killing the microbes to properly protect yourself. It is recommended that you avoid making your own homemade solutions and stick to store bought alcohol based products.

Bleach is a chemical product that can be used as a strong disinfectant for fighting germs and bacteria. There is a risk of getting chemical burns when working with bleach, to avoid this use a diluted bleach solution around your home. This will work just as effectively.

Cleaning Methods

One of the most suitable ways to clean these high risk surfaces is to use a solution of warm soapy water. Take a cloth, slightly dampen it in the mixture and wipe down all necessary surfaces.

Afterwards use a disinfectant spray to tackle any remaining germs or bacteria. Dettol products are most recommended as they kill 99.9% of bacteria and harmful germs. Spray over any surface and wipe down with a cloth. Make sure to read the instructions of products before use.

When it comes to floors, ensure all dust and debris is removed by thoroughly vacuuming. Follow this, by mopping with a solution of hot water and some disinfectant liquid. This will kill and reduce the number of germs on the floors and Dettol branded disinfectant liquids can leave a pleasant smell around your home.
