You Like to Do Your Bathroom Business out in the Open: Surprising Findings from Houzz

Have bathtubs had their day? Is privacy overrated? These are two of the surprising finds in a new remodeling trend report from Houzz.

Houzz surveyed "7,500 users who are in the midst of - or are planning - a bathroom remodel" for the report.

Find #1: People are ditching the bath.

Despite conventional wisdom about bathrooms that tell us we should not over-personalize or remove items that are embraced by the greater public, people are doing just that. Houzz found that "four out of 10 bathroom remodelers are skipping the tub."

#2: Privacy is overrated.

More than half of those surveyed are "saying goodbye to privacy when visiting the porcelain throne, choosing instead to leave their new master toilet exposed," said Houzz. "That said, homeowners 35 and older are more likely to keep their potty privacy."

This begs two very important questions:

1. Will taking a tub out of your master bath during a remodel hurt your resale value?
2. Why would anyone want to do their business out in the open?

Let's handle #1 first (no pun intended).

There are varying viewpoints on this. Some say as long as you have a tub in an another bathroom you'll be ok. And they add that a spacious, well-equipped shower with updated tile and multiple jets would more than make up for it. Still others argue that you will seriously limit the buyer pool for your home if you eliminate an important feature like a bath in your master bathroom.

Experts recommend you ask yourself one question first: how long do you plan to be in the home. If you plan to move up, relocate, retire, or expect to be in the home for only two or three years, making such a personal change to your home may not be the best idea. If the answer is more than three years or if this is your forever home, resale value won't be as important as making the home the way you want it..

And now for #2 (again with the pun!).

Apparently, the open concept craze that has taken over the main living space has now made itself to the bathroom. We're not quite sure what to make of the age divide there. Rather, we have some ideas but are opting not to share.

We can say this: If you're under 35 and want a big open space with no privacy in your bathroom, more power to you. If you're over 35 and are buying a home that has been remodeled in the past few years, you might have to add the cost of adding back in a door to your purchase price.

Open Bath

Some of the other finds of the survey:

  • Double sinks are on the rise
  • So are glass-enclosed showers (found in eight out of 10 new bathrooms of those surveyed)
  • Of those remodeling their bathroom, 91 percent choose high-efficiency toilets
  • Adding a window to the bathroom is a growing trend (48 percent of respondents)
  • Adding a skylight is less important (12 percent)
  • A mere seven percent want to let the light in to the shower "with LED lights in their showerheads"

Would you remove your bath? And how do you feel about bathroom privacy?

We'd love to hear your opinion.
