With all household pests, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Pantry beetles are a common problem brought into home via dry goods and pet food, but once they’re introduced to a household they will feed on and lay eggs in-virtually anything. All day goods in a cupboard should be kept sealed in order to deny these ubiquitous insects a food supply. Once pantry beetles have been discovered, the only cure is a total pantry cleanout. Insecticides are not recommended for areas that store food. Besides the visibly infested items, all opened or unsealed goods must be thrown away and the pantry itself should be thoroughly cleaned and vacuumed. If some goods absolutely cannot be thrown away, they should be placed in a sealed glass container or Ziploc bag for one month to ensure no eggs have survived that could cause a re-infestation.

Rasbperry crazy ants are another problem for homeowners better taken care of before they appear. After they were accidentally introduced from Brazil, the ants thrived in the warm, moist environment of coastal Texas. Exterminators first identified the Raspberry crazy ant in 2002, and the pest has been spreading rapidly across Texas, Louisiana and Georgia ever since.

Raspberry ants are mysteriously attracted to electricity and can cause expensive damage to a home, shorting out electrical systems, chewing through wires and even destroying household electronics. Control of Raspberry ants is extremely difficult. They are not attracted to normal ant baits, and most products available for sale to the general public are ineffective on this stubborn species. Professional exterminators have had some luck in controlling them with professional grade pesticides, but the sheer number of crazy raspberry ants in a colony usually makes the treatments effective for only a short time.

To prevent these ants from making a nest of your home or computer, remove trash, debris, and landscape materials that they can nest under. Once they have invaded, the only treatment is the professional insecticide fipronil, which happens to also be the best treatment for another common gulf coast pest, the incredibly destructive termite.

Two main species of termites target warm, humid areas. These are the Subterranean Termite and the Formosan Termite, the latter of which is often seen seeking out new homes in enormous swarms in the late spring. To avoid a costly and destructive infestation, experts recommend homeowners follow procedures similar to the ones used to control ants. Cellulose, wood and mulch should be kept away from the edges of the home and its’ siding. If at all possible, avoid the use of wood mulch near the home’s foundation all together. Homes in termite prone areas should be checked annually for termite damage and problems that could invite termite damage to begin, such as moisture around the foundation and in the basement, where termites often enter. Fortunately, there are a number of possible solutions, and finding the best termite treatment is just a matter of determining what type of termite you are dealing with.
