How to Pack Makeup for Moving

Moving can be hard on all your belongings, especially your makeup. Since makeup is made of many different powders, liquids, and other materials that can easily be damaged if not properly packed, it’s important to learn how to pack makeup for moving. Fortunately, there are a few tips that can ensure your makeup is well protected for a move.

How to Pack Makeup for Moving - Making the Process Simple

Knowing how to pack makeup for moving is rather simple. Consider cleaning out your makeup drawer before packing things away, reuse boxes and other containers, set aside what you need and more.

Clean Out Your Makeup Drawer

This is the first and simplest thing you need to do. Consider getting rid of any dried out or expired products as well as those without labels, broken or otherwise damaged. Most products will have a tiny expiration date on the side or bottom of the container, but if not, you can estimate. Foundations and lipsticks, for example, can last up to two years. Mascaras have shelf lives of about six months and things such as eyeshadows, blushes and other powder-based products can last between one and two years. Clean out these items, especially if you know you won’t use them in the future so that you’re downsizing the amount of items you’ll bring with you.

Re-Use

Find smaller boxes that you can use to store the items you’ve selected. Consider old boxes from shopping or old jewelry cases to pack everything away. Make sure the boxes are clean so that any dirt and debris won't mix with your makeup then label the boxes with the items you want to put into them.

Be Safe

Use bubble wrap to line the smaller boxes, drawers or cases to ensure the products are safe in case of impact. For nail polish, perfumes and other items made of fragile glass, consider wrapping each individual bottle. You can use newspaper, packing paper or any other type of cushioning you can find.

Set Aside What You Need

Assess the products you’ll need to access on a daily basis and set them aside in a separate make up bag. The last thing you want is to have to go back and retrieve them once you’ve packed up most of your items. One of the easiest ways to know what to set aside is to go through your daily face wash/hair/shower/makeup routine in your head and make a list of everything that you use. Once that’s down, you can organize your other makeup.

Use Bubble Wrap

Pack all your makeup products in the boxes you’ve labeled and cover the top of the box, drawer or case with bubble wrap.

Double Check

Once everything is packed, tape the pack shut and confirm that you’ve labelled everything. The idea is to keep similar types of makeup together (for instance all the nail polish in one bag, all the perfume in another, and so on). Separating items will help keep things organized, speed up the unpacking process and also prevent liquids from getting into powders, or vice versa.

Bottom Line

Packing your makeup for a move doesn’t have to be a hassle, nor does it have to end with lipstick or nail polish at the bottom of your suitcase. With a few basic items and tips on how to pack makeup for moving, you should be ready to go.
